Jim McMahon
Jim McMahon began his career in inkjet in the Fall of 1978. He knew nothing about ink jet at the time. Jim’s first task was to install and test a Steve Zoltan, Single Nozzle ink jet made by employees at Exxon Office Systems in 1978 under the direction by Steve Zoltan. Jim never knew Steve at the time. The Zoltan ink jet unexpectedly printed with two different size drops to produce bold and light weight alphanumerics on paper. Everyone at Exxon was surprised.Â
Jim was encouraged to investigate the cause. Jim proposed fluid resonances and was told to write up a patent on the idea. The patent issued in 1981. Exxon dropped the Zoltan Ink jet project for multijet designs.Â
Jim left Exxon in 1984 to work for Howtek, Inc. and designed a less resonant fluid system for the Zoltan ink jet. This ink jet has been working in Solidscape 3D printers for over 30 years.
